Obituary for Steve Peter "Flats" Prebarich

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Resurrection Catholic Church, Eveleth. Celebrant will be Fr. Eamonn Boland. Visitation will be one hour before at the church. Inurnment will be in Eveleth Cemetery with military honors accorded by Mesaba Range Post 1172 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eveleth.

Steve P. "Flats" Prebarich, 95, of Eveleth died Thursday, August 30, 2018 at home. He was born on December 25, 1922 at home in Eveleth to Peter and Katherine (Stanishich) Prebarich.

Steve graduated from Eveleth High School in 1947 and attended Eveleth Junior College. He was a World War II Navy Veteran having served his country from 1943 – 1946 and was commissioned on the USS Sullivan. Following his honorable discharge, Steve returned home and began working at US Steel. He was united in marriage to LaVerne M. Hyppa on June 13, 1953 at the former Holy Family Catholic Church. He retired as a millwright from US Steel in 1983.

Steve was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Eveleth Elks Lodge 1161, American Legion #239 of Virginia and Mesaba Range Post 1172 VFW of Eveleth. He enjoyed spending time in his yard, garage, splitting firewood and spending time with his family. Steve was especially proud of the American flag in his yard, his time spent in the Navy and the fact that he was born on Christmas.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne “Lovey” and their children, Steve (Grace) of Longmont, Colorado, Douglas and Peter (Ann) both of Eveleth; grandchildren, Carrie (Troy) Heaton, Christine (Kevin) Monez, Kristin (Travis) Pikula, Alicia Prebarich (Matt Hoffmann), Amanda (James) Molde, Marissa Prebarich, Alexandra Prebarich, Matthew Prebarich; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Dzubnar of Eveleth, Lucy Fosmo of Ishpeming, Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Bernice Stefanich; grandson, Jeff Stefanich and siblings, Frank Prebonich, Nick Prebarich, John Prebarich, Mary Erchul, Ann Penoncello, Mija Kochevar and Katie Putzel.
