Obituary for Lois (Tamte) Johnson

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 5, 2018 at First Covenant Church in Virginia. Officiating will be Pastor Dennis Anders and Pastor Mark Mathes. Visitation will be one hour before at the church. Interment will be in Eveleth Cemetery.

Lois (Tamte) Johnson left her home at St. Raphael’s Health Center to walk the streets of gold with her Savior and many loved ones on April 16, 2018.

Lois was born February 25, 1921, the middle child of nine born to Oscar and Florence (Helstrom) Tamte. Her summers were spent at the family cabin on Sand Lake, surrounded by siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. After attending Junior College, she worked for Lenci and Englund with City Service Petroleum Products and Construction in Virginia. She also worked in City Service offices in Sioux Falls, SD, Watertown, SD, Algona, IA and Montgomery, MN. On February 19, 1946, Lois married Hubert (Johnny) Johnson, and they made their home in Eveleth.

Lois served her Lord and Savior for many years in many ways. In the 1st Covenant Church she shared her musical talents at the piano and organ and sang solos, duets with her sister, Betty, and in the church choir. Their home was open to weekly Good News Club meetings for ten years, with up to 30 children attending. Later she taught Good News Clubs in other homes. Lois was very active in Christian Women, serving as Bible Study coordinator, often serving as guide at neighborhood Bible studies.

Lois had the gift of making everyone feel special. There were always cookies ready for the kids, red velvet chocolate cake for birthdays, her special cinnamon rolls and the wonderful meringues she served with fruit and ice cream to literally hundreds of guests. She was a great hostess and wonderful cook. Along with her husband, she loved having company for Sunday dinner or Friday night coffee. Living at their lake place in Wolf during the summers, Sundays were filled with lots of people, potluck suppers, swimming, and volleyball, and then always going back to town for the Sunday night church services. She loved her family – children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always happiest when they were eating something delicious at her table.

Lois is survived by her daughters, Peg (DuWayne) Johnston and Jeanne (Rich) Ogilvie; son-in-law, Steve Sellnow; grandchildren, Beth (Aaron) Ganskow, Faith (Braden) Johnson, Kristin (Brian) Schelling, Nathan (Erin) Sellnow, Jon (Christy) Sellnow, Kelsey Sellnow, Luke (Sara) Nyberg, Chris (Caitlin) Ogilvie, Erin (Greg) Thielbar, and Zech (Nicole) Ogilvie; and great-grandchildren, Hudson, Rachel, Tristan, Karina, Gage, Caitlyn, Hayden, Nolan, Ethan, Wyatt, Gus, Linnea, Everett, Madellyn, Annika, and Link; and sister-in-law Doris Tamte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter, Beverly Sellnow, as well as her siblings, Roy (Ruby) Tamte, Arnold (Elsie) Tamte, Ruth (Luther) Swanson, Alice (Russ) Cervin, Betty (Herbert)Carlson, Kenneth (Mary Lou) Tamte, Richard Tamte, and James (Caryl) Tamte.
