Obituary for Kathleen "Kathy" M. Kilen

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018 at United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth. Officiant will be Pastor John Dietz. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Kathleen M. Kilen, 68, of Hibbing who had a beautiful mind, loving heart and a nurturing soul, passed into eternal life Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Guardian Angels Health & Rehabilitation Center in Hibbing, following a courageous 3 ½ year battle with Posterior Cortical Atrophy.

Kathy was born on July 20, 1949 in Biwabik, Minnesota to Wayne and Esther (Hallfors) Salmi. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in education from UMD and her Master’s Degree from Bemidji State. She worked for the Eveleth school district for 35 years teaching English, History, Social Studies, Government and AP College Prep courses. She inspired many and worked closely with the Close-Up Program, taking students to Washington, D.C. 16 times. Kathy was united in marriage to Richard A. Kilen on August 21, 1980. She loved to golf, refinish furniture, travel and spend time with family. Kathy loved the outdoors and the majestic serenity of the cabin.

Kathy was a loving spouse, mother, sister and friend and will be missed by her husband, Richard; son, Cole; step-children, Kristine (Bob) Scott of Henderson, NV, Chad Kilen of Mt. Iron and Kip (Debbie) Kilen of Mendota Heights; her mother, Esther of Virginia; brothers, Brad (Janet) Salmi of Biwabik, Greg (Jo-Ann) Salmi of Eveleth, Lyle Salmi of Decatur, IL; sisters, Sharon (Larry) Stimac and Val Judnick both of Eveleth; step grandchildren, Michael, Amanda, Molly, Anders, Bjorn, Patrick, Zach and Noah; special “brother-in-law”, Andrew Selvo of Hibbing and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wayne and brother, Loren Salmi.
