Obituary for John Dave Vlajnich

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 8, 2017 at Resurrection Catholic Church, Eveleth. Celebrant will be Fr. Michael Garry. Visitation will be one hour before at the church. Honorary urn bearers are Clarence Cadeau, Craig Kirtland, Bill Kirtland and Rick Kirtland. Inurnment will be in Eveleth Cemetery in the spring.

John D. Vlajnich, 84, of Virginia, died Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center, Duluth. He was born on September 30, 1933 in Eveleth to Joseph and Mary M. (Zoretich) Vlajnich. John graduated from Eveleth High School, attended college and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Elaine Gustafson on October 1, 1955 in Virginia. They were longtime residents of Eveleth and Virginia. John worked for Hoover Construction, Ames Construction, Virginia Public Utilities, Pittsburg Pacific and taught welding at the Eveleth Vo-tech under the Ceta program. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Operating Engineers and Mesaba Range Post 1172 Veterans of Foreign War Post 1172 of Eveleth. He enjoyed hockey, hunting, dancing and music.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Elaine; daughter, Chris (Richard) Persons; grandson, David; step-grandsons, Brad (Jesse) and Michael; sister, Lucy Kirtland; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Clarence) Cadeau; special nieces, Carla (Steve) Moberg, Tammy (Joey) Koivunen, Terry (Jimmy) Hiti, Nadene (William) Hendrickson and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Joey and his beloved puppy Trixie.
