Obituary for Eve Geraldine Karakas

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Resurrection Catholic Church, Eveleth. Con-celebrants will be Fr. Charles P. Flynn and Fr. Eamonn Boland. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Eveleth Area Community Foundation, P.O. Box 231, Eveleth, MN 55734

Eve (Mrkonich) Karakas, 95, of Eveleth, died Saturday, May 5, 2018 at St. Raphael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth. She was born on July 22, 1922, the daughter of John and Celia (Hobrle) Mrkonich. Eve was a graduate of Eveleth High School and attended Eveleth Junior College. She was united in marriage to John T. Karakas on July 30, 1949.

During World War II, Eve worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C. and then for the State of Minnesota Unemployment Agency. She was an owner/operator of Hamm’s Distribution in Eveleth. Eve was a charter member of the Eveleth Women’s Curling Club and of the Eveleth Women’s Golf Club. She was president of the local Croatian Fraternal Union. Eve enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards, traveling, flowers, the state high school hockey tournaments and the Fourth of July in Eveleth.

She is survived by her daughter, Cammy (Mike) Newman; granddaughter, Alex; numerous nieces and nephews; special niece, Gerry Karakas Moen and special nephew, Lou (Sonny) Karakas; special friends, Daisy and Bill Jr. McKenzie and numerous other family, friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John; sister, Julie Krantz; husband, John; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law and good friends, Irma Lavato and Ann Oberstar.
