Obituary for Edward Wayne Harju

A memorial mass will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 18, 2018 at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth. Celebrant will be Fr. Charles P. Flynn. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m.

Edward W. Harju, 80, of Eveleth, died Monday, May 14, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. He was born on February 10, 1938 in Eveleth to Wayne and Bernice (Kostanko) Harju.

Ed graduated from Eveleth High School. He was united in marriage to Jean F. Gentile on July 25, 1964 at the former Holy Family Catholic Church in Eveleth. Ed worked as a maintenance foreman for Eveleth Mines, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed camping, cruises and trips to Las Vegas. He also enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, being outdoors, on the farm, fishing, hunting and spending time at the deer shack in Fairbanks, with his brother John. Ed will be remembered as the man in the beer department at Marge’s Liquor, where he worked with his wife and family and opened the store every morning at 8:00 a.m. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and Eveleth Elks Lodge 1161.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Ed (Michelle); granddaughters, Skyler, Tayler and Lauren; brother, Jack (Dawn) Harju; sister, Sheila Harju and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Mark and John and sisters, Faye Miller and Judy Haupt.
