Dr. John P. Gulon (“Doc” “Jack”), 91, of Eveleth MN, died on March 29, 2017, at the Eveleth Fitzgerald Nursing Home, with his family by his side. John was born at the More Hospital in Eveleth on January 10, 1926 to John and Victoria Gulan. He was raised in Gilbert where he attended and graduated from Gilbert High School. It was there he excelled as a student, accomplished athlete and a standout member of the swim team.

Following high school, John served his country in the United States Army as a Lieutenant and Cryptographer. He was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. After serving his country he attended Virginia Junior College and the Northern Illinois School of Optometry in Chicago. It was in Chicago where he met his beloved wife of 67 years, Joan Jacqueline Westfall, who preceded him in death in December of 2016.

In 1950 John and Joan returned to Eveleth where they made their home and raised their family of 8 children. While raising his family he built a successful optometric practice that cared for several generations of families throughout the Iron Range for over 42 years.

John was active in many community organizations. He was a member of the American Legion, Jaycees, the Optimist Club, and the Minnesota Optometric Society. He was a devoted member of Resurrection Church, serving as a Lector, member of the Pro-Life Committee, and Pastoral Council. He was a man who lived and demonstrated his faith daily.

John enjoyed hunting with his dog Missy, deer hunting with his sons, brothers and nephews, fishing with his children and grandchildren, golfing with his buddies, and spending time with his wife Joan. John will be deeply missed and always remembered for the love and support he gave to his family.

John is survived by his children, Elizabeth (Dr. Mike) Miskovich of Grand Rapids, Mary Sauter of Denver, CO, Barbara (David) Bozicevich of Virginia, Dr. John E. of Minneapolis, Carol (Robert) Mayasich of Sioux Falls, SD, Paul (Roberta) of Brooklyn Park, Thomas of Detroit Lakes, and Patricia (Russell) Becker of Dellwood.
