Obituary for Benjamin Green Swarthout

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Peace United Methodist Church in Virginia. Pastor Terry Tilton will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before at the church. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery. The family would like to thank all the staff on the Lakeside North wing of Parkview Health Center in Oshkosh, WI. Also, to Sue and Jen and the social workers of Generations Hospice of Fond du Lac, WI.

Benjamin Green Swarthout, 93, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, formerly of Eveleth died peacefully at Parkview Health Center in Oshkosh on Monday, June 26, 2017 of natural causes.

He was born on April 11, 1924 in Eveleth to Benjamin Green and Ida Christine (Hilder) Swarthout. Ben graduated from Eveleth High School and attended Milwaukee School of Engineering. He was a WWII veteran in the United States Army Air Forces where he flew P-40 and P-47 aircraft. He was also with the Minnesota Air National Guard and flew P-51 aircraft during the Korean War. Ben was married to Mildred Adeline Friedman on April 12, 1947. Following their marriage, he built a house and business, Range Heating and Supply, on St. Mary’s Lake in Fayal Township.

Ben played semi-pro hockey with the New York Ranger farm team. He enjoyed fishing at his cabin in Canada, flying his Cub and T-Craft airplanes, gardening and driving his tractor. Ben had the gift of gab and would talk to anyone. He moved 9 years ago to Oshkosh, WI to be closer to his son and his family. He enjoyed many years with them and adored his granddaughters.

He is survived by his son, Paul (Lori) Swarthout of Neenah, WI; granddaughters, Mallory Swarthout of Appleton, WI, Kelly Swarthout of Oshkosh, WI and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, parents, Benjamin and Ida Swarthout and siblings, Elaine Newcomb, Earl Swarthout and Ralph Swarthout.
